Autumn Equinox Yoga: Set Your Intention

Times of transition are extra potent, though setting your intention at any time is excellent. Watch the short video above to learn more, and listen to me share my intention with you.

Feel free to post your intention as a comment below if you want to share it with me and others here. 🙂

My Autumn Equinox Intention

I choose love and light, health and wealth, joy and laughter, peace and beauty.

I choose to be a blessing; to myself, to this planet, and to all the divine children who play upon it.

How To Get Healthy Quick in Kamloops (and Elsewhere)

The changing of the seasons often brings with it a cold and flu shakedown. So many people get taken out by these bugs – in fact, I’m just getting over one – but I’m getting over it in record time.

So I thought I’d put together some tips for strengthening the immune system, as they seem to be working quite well for me.

It’s nice to have a lot of tips in one place like this so you can just take the info and apply it to your health. Feel free to add your own ideas as a comment below.

3 Things To Stay Away From When You’re Sick

  1. Refined Sugar. I say refined because most fresh fruit is helpful, but other sugars are not. Sugar feeds the bad bacteria that you don’t want, and generally makes it harder for your body to get well quick.
  2. Dairy. Milk products increase the amount of mucus in your system. And, let’s be blunt here, it’s amazing how much snot the body is capable of producing. You don’t want to add to that do you?
  3. Bread and flour products. Gluten also adds to mucus production, as well as gumming up other systems. Avoiding gluten helps your body cleanse whatever it doesn’t need out of your system.

You basically want to go on a mild cleanse when you’re fighting illness. The cleaner you feed your body the better. That means staying away from heavy and processed foods.

When your system is clear, it can do its job easier. If you’re trying to digest a big meal (especially one heavy with meat), you’re taking resources away from your immune system. Give your body only nourishing foods, and you’ll have a much easier time healing.

Things To Include In Your “Get Well Now” Regime

How Yoga Therapy Brings Freedom From Pain

No one wants to be in pain, yet so many of us go around with one or more areas of our bodies hurting, aching, or otherwise saying “Ouch!”

Here’s the thing: pain is your body communicating with you. It’s saying “Something here isn’t working, so can you please change it?”

The really helpful part about pain is that it gives you feedback. If you do one thing, say rounding your lower back, and your back hurts, you know something about that isn’t working. If you do it differently, such as lifting your lower back in and up to create the natural curve, and your back feels fine, you now know that change DOES work, and that’s what your body has been asking you to do (or at least part of it).

It isn’t personal – it’s not like you’ve done something wrong because you never learned how your shoulders want to be held so your neck doesn’t hurt, or that flattening your lower back can lead to serious discomfort.

On the contrary, it’s surprising how few doctors and body workers actually understand the principles of optimal alignment. I frequently work with someone who has exercises from their physio that don’t feel good. When they understand and apply optimal alignment to the same exercises, all of a sudden they feel good.

It isn’t necessarily the action or exercise that brings pain or relief, but the alignment itself that makes all the difference.

How Yoga Therapy Works

I love teaching Yoga Therapy, because generally the person I’m helping gets instant feedback from their body, and they’re grinning from ear to ear in the first five minutes of the private because we’ve already found the cause of the pain and they’ve had a taste of how simple it is to be pain free.

Quick and Tasty Veggie Miso Noodle Soup

This is one of my favorite soups, both for flavour and convenience. This morning I actually had it for breakfast, as I was craving something warm and hearty to complement the misty morning.

Generally my soups take an hour or so to prepare, but this one is as instant as a healthy soup can be, making it ideal for when you need to eat right away, or just don’t have a lot of time to cook.

Preparation time: about 12 minutes. Makes 2 servings.

The Secret of Contentment

This is another one of my late night inspirations, where the words come without thought and ask to be written…

Wrapped in Blankets of Bliss

True contentment is not the elusive hiding thing it is made out to be.

On the contrary, it awaits, open armed and patient

For your awareness of its company.

To experience this companion, comfort embodied in ease,

Simply enter the present moment fully.

Saturate your senses with the Now;

Enrich this living life with your focus and acceptance of what Is.

Be swept up in the act of

Being.

Here you will find that the breath itself is made of waves of peace

Woven with the light of joy and loving songs of truth.

Give yourself over to it.

Surrender all struggles to the wisdom and Grace of that which breathes you.

Realize, here in the fathomless Ocean of Beauty and Being

That, beneath layers of other feelings and holding on,

You were content all along.

100 Burpees (My own Kamloops Boot Camp)

A while back, maybe a couple months ago, my partner Casey decided to do 100 Burpees and invited me to join him. I thought it would be a fun challenge, seeing as I teach the Kamloops Yoga Fitness Boot Camp, and a great workout.

Burpees are one of my favorite exercises because they work so much of the body. It’s a combination of a jump squat and push-up. You get core, legs, shoulders, back, chest and arms all in one go.

It definitely gets your heart rate up and blood pumping!

We got the whole thing on video, and I just got around to editing it, so I thought I’d post it here for your amusement and (hopefully) motivation.

Set Your Intention

These words came to me late last night, inviting me – almost insisting – that they be written and shared. It felt like a call to Truth; a feeling deep with meaning and potency…

Set Your Intention

Stand deliberately upon this Earth

For you are a bridge between Earth and Sky.

Open to the current of your breath,

Expand your awareness beyond the boundaries of your skin.

You are a child of the infinite.

Limitless possibilities await your choice.

3 Steps To Get Back On Track With Kamloops Yoga, Health and Fitness

It’s high Summer in Kamloops. You can tell when you go to the park, watch people crowd on the beach, or realize that half of your friends are camping or otherwise out of town each weekend.

Even though Summer doesn’t technically turn into fall ‘till September 21st, it always seems like the end of August marks the finale of Summer. For this reason, it often feels like August is a bit of a free-for-all.

With all the camping, parties, traveling, and hot summer nights, yoga classes are often pretty empty. It makes me smile, really.

But September is coming.

And with it there is a fresh sweeping feeling that marks the beginning of another school year, and the start of many things.

September invites you to re-assess your priorities and re-commit to the things that are important to you. These might include eating healthy, getting in shape, and doing yoga.

The great thing about September is it brings an excitement that lingers from the anticipation of the start of school, even long after we’ve graduated. You actually WANT to get organized and take care of things. It’s just in the air.

Here are some ideas to help you get your health, yoga, and fitness back on track:

Anusara Yoga Teacher Desirée Rumbaugh Coming to Vancouver!

Desirée Rumbaugh, a humble yet wildly wonderful AnusaraŸ yoga instructor, is coming back to Vancouver September 10-12.

She is internationally celebrated as one of the most skilled and authentic instructors; a woman who can not only enter some of the most advanced postures herself, but who can safely guide others to do the same.

The last time she was in town was very special for me, partially because Des helped me to expand my own practice, and also because I was honoured to assist her for one of the sessions.

If you’re in BC, I highly recommend attending her workshop. Really I can’t say enough good things about her teaching.

Earth Healing Mantra ~ Om Shri Gaia Ma…

This song was inspired by my deep love and connection to Earth.

It welled up within me, whispering and then singing with awareness of the complete interconnection we all have.

I have climbed to the knees of a giant Douglas Fir Tree and sang this into the moss.

I have stood in the clearest stream of water, illuminated in sunshine. This mantra singing to me from within.
