How Yoga Helps You Trust in Yourself

“To thine own self be true.”

This is a central theme in life, and one that yoga invites you to visit over and over again.

Satya, one of the yamas (guidelines of yoga), is all about being truthful–especially to yourself! For if you are not being honest and honouring of your own truth, then how can you extend that out into your family and life?

Every time you come to your mat to practice asana, every breath is asking you, “What is true for me right now?” How the pose looks for you today may be very different from what it looked like yesterday, or how you will express it tomorrow.

Meditation is a constant practice of truth. There is nowhere to hide from your thoughts in meditation. Instead, this practice helps you quiet and choose your thoughts more mindfully. It creates a more intimate relationship with the essence of who you are, which is also the essence of your truth.

Every area of life invites a deeper discovery of what is true for you in this moment. The food you eat, the activities you choose, the people you spend time with, the way you arrange your home, and on and on.

For me, part of my journey of personal growth has been, in large part, realizing how to be true to myself and not focus on external sources (other people, culture) to tell me what is true for me.

Yoga has been enormously valuable in this self-evolution of releasing that which is not my truth, and allowing my true self to shine forth.

“Defining myself, as opposed to being defined by others, is one of the most difficult challenges I face.”
~ Carol Mosely-Braun

Sometimes it’s difficult to be true to yourself because you feel responsible to someone else. This is hardest with those you’re close to, such as family, as well as in the realm of business.

In these situations, where the path is not always clear, it takes a dedicated practice of being open to many different perspectives–not necessarily the perspectives of others, but seeing things from your own view in many different ways.

Yoga is great at helping reveal different perspectives!

If you’re struggling with wondering how you can fully live your truth without letting someone else down, remember that it is not up to you to fulfil the expectations of others. Instead, ask yourself how you can make decisions that align with your truth in ways that are as harmonious as possible.

By choosing to be true to yourself you actually empower others by showing them it is possible, and a way to live in the highest integrity. Take your time making decisions, especially when they involve others, but be sure that you are choosing what is best for your own heart and path in life.

You may find that by communicating clearly and skillfully, with kindness and respect–even if it’s uncomfortable at first–you can release the expectations you feel others have for you (and those they actually hold, which are not always the same thing).

And what a huge relief that is, eh? Letting go of expectations is like taking all the pressure off your shoulders.

However, we never have control over how someone responds to our own choices. So if it doesn’t go as you envisioned, but you are doing what you need to do for yourself, trust that somehow things are unfolding as they need to, and that the other person now has an opportunity to reflect and grow if they so choose.

Ultimately, it is up to you to live YOUR life, while allowing others their own experiences.

Trust yourself.

When in doubt, take a deep breath, and let your heart guide the way.

~ Hardy D. Jackson

~ Clark Moustakas

Happiness and a Home Yoga Practice

Happiness is a choice. Actually, everything is a choice, or at least how we respond is a choice.

But it isn’t always easy to shift emotions, especially if you’re feeling overwhelm, fear, frustration, or sadness. So what does yoga say about that?

Well, one of the best ways to move energy and shift the way you feel is to literally MOVE your body.

To that end, yoga is an amazing tool and companion. You can simply start your practice with a few breaths to calm and center, and have an intention that you come into a vibration of peace, happiness, and comfort during your practice.

If you’re already joyful and feeling great, then your practice can simply be a celebration of life! But if you’re feeling “off,” then yoga offers you a way to feel good again.

Having a home practice is an exceptional way to care for yourself and keep your body, heart and mind healthy and balanced.

Inspiration for your Home Yoga Practice

” Approach your practice with openness and curiosity, rather than self-judgment or competitiveness.” ~ Rodney Yee

“Start slow and discover your own inner teacher.” ~ Kreg Weiss

“I try to do something twice a day, sometimes it’s just a little bit. The place that my life happens to be will determine its intensity–anything from restorative to high intensity vinyasa. I try to be true to myself each day and see what I’m moved to do. I don’t have a mold or external blueprint that I follow, but in general I’m pulled toward vinyasa, heat-based movement, moving energy through my body. Rigid routines don’t really work well for me. I like fluid practice instead. My style is based on being safe and opening the body from a place that is protecting the joint system. I do a lot of creative sequencing, and I teach people my philosophy, “To thine own self be true.” You intuitively know what is right.” ~ Baron Baptiste

Often I do a short home practice. Or I randomly break out into yoga wherever I am. Fun stuff!

Your yoga practice doesn’t need to be an hour or longer to make a great deal of difference. In fact, often 10 or 20 minutes does the trick, and even 5 minutes can leave you feeling infinitely better!

So if you feel inimidated or lack the motivation to roll out your mat at home, just tell yourself you’ll do 5 minutes of yoga. Get started, and if that’s all you do, fine, but you’ll likely discover that it feels so good you just keep moving, breathing, and realigning with your true nature of harmony.

Of course, yoga isn’t the only way to shift your attitude.

A deep breath and conscious decision can be enough, or a moment to appreciate nature, to feel grateful for all that you have in your life, or to simply surrender the feelings that aren’t what you want to hold, and open to those that feel good. Here’s a quote that you can say out loud to create more happiness:

“I’m going to be happy. I’m going to skip. I’m going to be glad. I’m going to smile a lot. I’m going to be easy. I’m going to count my blessings. I’m going to look for reasons to feel good. I’m going to dig up positive things from the past. I’m going to look for positive things where I stand. I’m going to look for positive things in the future. It is my natural state to be a happy person. It’s natural for me to love and to laugh. This is what is most natural for me. I am a happy person!”

The yoga sanctuary at St. Andrews on the Square (Kamloops, BC)

St. Andrews on the Square. Located at the corner of 2nd and Seymour St., Downtown Kamloops

The energy of a place has a lot to do with the experience you have there.

That said, you can meditate in the middle of a sidewalk, or do yoga in the airport. Been there, done that. It can be fun, an excellent challenge, and an extraordinary practice.

However, the depth of opening and feeling you have access to when you are in an ideal environment
is very meaningful.

St. Andrews on the Square feels like a sanctuary. It feels safe, peaceful, spacious. It has a definite beauty that goes beyond the arched ceilings, stained glass windows and courtyard garden.

My Thoughts on Mentoring Yoga Teachers and Students

What is Yoga Mentoring?

In my way of seeing it, yoga mentoring comes in many forms depending on the circumstances.

For instance, you might ask for mentoring as a yoga student, a yoga practitioner wanting to be a teacher, a yoga teacher in training or in the process of becoming certified, or a certified teacher looking to grow.

There are many stages along the path of practicing and teaching yoga. Mentoring is something that can be sought out whenever you yearn to grow with one-on-one training and guidance.

I have mentored many students who have become teachers or who came to me for further development in their teaching. What I am starting to do, and really enjoy, is acting as mentor and trainer to personally certify yoga teachers who have been students of mine. This one-on-one mentoring is something special and I’m glad to be exploring this avenue of serving as a teacher.

It’s outside the box in today’s world of yoga teacher training programs and courses, though most of these programs are excellent and have great benefits. So I’m in no way knocking anyone else’s way of training teachers. This is simply what I’m doing right now, and this article examines my thoughts on this role I’m playing.

Through one-on-one mentoring I can not only teach the essential knowledge any yoga teacher would consider a necessary foundation, but I can cater to the individual student’s specific needs of development. I can also draw upon experiences and trainings the individual has received elsewhere to enhance and integrate their existing skills.

Finding Healing and Wholeness with Yoga

Many traditions and modalities of healing have the approach that by healing, you are returning to your healed state.

This is something that already exists for you, this wholeness that is natural and inherant in all of us. It simply gets forgotten, scattered, twisted, cluttered, and otherwise messed with in ways that manifest as the variety of human pain and disease.

But there are ways to return to this healed state–to reaquaint yourself with the vibration of your true self.

One way I like to think of returning to the healed state of being is to let go of the vibrations that don’t feel good and focus on the ones that do.

Like when I’m in the peaceful presence of trees, I feel good. I naturally let go of stress and contraction, and return to my natural pulsation. That is a vibration of wholeness.

What about you, when and where do you naturally return to that pulsation of peace, joy, and pure being?

Yoga brings healing on many levels.

Make Your Own 5 Minute Yoga Practice [Video]

There are ways to give yourself the very needed time to cultivate self-love and support, even when it doesn’t feel like there is space in the day. You can create windows of time for your yoga practice that revive and re-inspire you on every level.

Even one deep breath can make all the difference.

When it comes to asana, the physical postures and practice of yoga, my body craves it every single day!

Yet, because life can be busy and time becomes a premium, I’ve found myself developing a home practice that fits into 5, 10, or 15 minutes.

In this video, I show you one possible 5 minute practice. (Okay, it’s only 4:27, but I did do Savasana at the end and you don’t see that bit.)

The singing in the background is me. A bluesy Om of sorts, with occasional accompaniment by my dog Riley.

5 Minute Yoga Practice Flow

So that’s an example of what my practice might look like if I had only 5 minutes to stretch everything that needed stretching, and open to a more full and free ME.

You very likely have experienced how much more freedom and ease you feel when you’ve taken time to strengthen and stretch your body, as well as connect to a deeper sense of self.

The increased clarity, circulation, and feeling of well-being is very noticeable!

So what does your yoga practice look like if you only have 5 or 10 minutes?

Your practice might not look like mine. It might look like a chair practice, a slow gentle sequence, a rock-star arm balance play session, or just 5 minutes of Legs Up the Wall pose followed by Savasana.

It’s about finding whatever is most appropriate for you, for your body and any needs it has, and for your energy or capability at any given moment. Day to day it changes.

Part of a home yoga practice is learning to trust yourself and feel what’s right for you.

Art of Alignment: Yoga Workshop ~ Mastering the Basics and Beyond

Art of Alignment: Yoga Workshop – Mastering the Basics and Exploring Intermediate Variations

The last Art of Alignment workshop I offered sold out and was so well received, I’ve decided to create another workshop along a similar format, focusing on mindful alignment to receive enhanced benefits, comfort, and enjoyment so you can expand your yoga practice.

PLEASE NOTE, this workshop is designed for you if:

  • You want to understand how precise alignment can help you feel more comfortable in your body and in your yoga practice.
  • You want to really ‘get’ the basic poses in yoga. (These poses aren’t necessarily easy or simple, but they are the foundation of all other poses.)
  • You want to use the knowledge you gain through the alignment to take your personal yoga practice to the next level – whatever that is for you: whether it means finding relief from pain or playing in more advanced postures in yoga.

In fact, my yoga practice completely blossomed when I learned the techniques I’ll be teaching in these classes! AND I am able to apply this knowledge to the rest of my life.

This is what I want to share with you.

This workshop is currently full. If you’d like to be notified of future workshops and yoga classes, please subscribe to my Yoga from the Heart Newsletter.

Parsvakonasana can be a fabulous stretch for your hips, hip flexors, shoulders and side body. Plus, it often brings a profound opening in your breath that feels incredible!

This two day workshop helps you explore a new paradigm in therapeutic alignment, and gives you the tools to align optimally which leads to a more fulfilling yoga practice and inspired life.

Discover how to practice yoga safely and skillfully, address any areas where you currently experience pain, and feel more comfortable in your body.

Learn how to get the most benefit from basic poses which are the foundation for all levels of yoga practice, and how these poses translate into more intermediate versions OR modifications appropriate for your body.

This workshop is ideal for beginners and experienced practitioners alike.

The Yoga of Reciprocity: Brilliant Abundance (Ayni)

There is a concept in Andean culture called “Ayni.”

Ayni is the exchange of reciprocity in every way. It tells us that all is interwoven, and is the central, root principle of the Andean culture.

One of the beautiful things about having this awareness of reciprocity as a foundation to all of life is that it encourages respect, kindness, knowledge, and the blessings that each person has to be shared. Through this sharing, there is not only enough for everyone, but an abundance of goodness and wealth in every sense.

Here’s a quote demostrating the same concept from a great yogi:

“Divine Abundance follows the law of service and generosity. Give and then receive. Give to the world the best you have and the best will come back to you.”  ~ Paramahansa Yoganada

We all want abundance and flow of goodness in our lives. And I know that you likely have this concept in your awareness in many ways.

However, I’d like to draw your attention to another perspective of Ayni or reciprocity that often draws less focus, but can create great abundance of health, happiness, and success in your life.

Perfection and Great Healing in Reciprocity

Just as giving to the world brings those gifts back to you, what you give yourself is what you receive.

Let’s look at this example: say you have an area in your body or life that you are unhappy with. Perhaps there is a physical discomfort or limitation, or perhaps there is a judgement you hold for yourself on some level, be it physical or otherwise.

If you extend feelings of judgment, anger, impatience, or dislike to yourself in any way, these heavy energies show up in what you receive from yourself and can manifest physically.

In contrast, if you practice giving yourself love, kindness, and complete acceptance–espeically those parts of you that have not been receiving these gifts–you will find a great healing occurs in the quality of what you feel and experience in your body and life.

When your focus is to give lovingkindness, joy, compassion, peace, and light to yourself and others, these elements are abundant in your experience.

And what is abundance, truly, if not the physical and energetic manifestations of goodness and freedom?

When you are in right relationship, or balanced reciprocity with the world and yourself, all that you desire comes forth. This includes health, wealth, and fulfillment on every level.

Kamloops Yoga Offerings, and Creating Peace at the Dawning of the Year 2013

I like to think of yoga as a peace offering.

When you practice with this in mind, it brings a vibration of harmony and peace to every cell of your body, to your mind, and to your emotions.

And, of course, whatever vibration or state of being you create in yourself also ripples out to the world around you.

We are at the dawn of a new year.

It is time to find gratitude for all that 2012 brought, and let it go. With this release, there is space to welcome the gifts of the moment, and open to the limitless possibility of 2013.

What seeds of intention would you like to plant in this potent transition?

Whatever you choose, if you invite peace to be your companion then all of life flows more easily, and you contribute to creating a peaceful Earth. A very high practice indeed!

Weaving a Practice of Peace

Here are three examples of what a peaceful practice can look like:

1.) Sweet and Restful:

On Mondays at 9am I teach a Deep Healing Restorative Yoga class, which blends gentle yet active stretches with restful and completely supported poses. This class allows you to go deep, yet feel very safe and take it slow. The combination of active poses and restorative ones helps your body, heart and mind return to your own natural pulsation, which is immensely healing.

This class often includes meditative practices, and sometimes mantra. This means you are guided lovingly into a place where you connect with your own inner truth, and the sanctuary of your heart where peace resides.

2.) Flowing and Strong:

Both my Align and Flow yoga classes on Wednesdays at 9am and the Yoga Boot Camp program cultivate different levels of strength, playful challenge, and inner peace. I’ll speak to the latter in the next section, but let’s explore the benefits of the Align and Flow practice now.

When you find a challenging situation come up off-the-mat, you are able to call upon the qualities of yourself that get you through a tough yet satisfying yoga practice, and these aspects bring a deeper peace and flow to life, letting you live in a more aware and engaged way rather than feeling as if you’re just “getting through”.

Having a steady yoga practice that brings a balance by developing strength and sweetness at the same time helps you to find these contrary complements in other areas of your life, and embrace them with mindful kindness. It also brings immense health benefits, making the experience of being human more joyful indeed!

3.) Yoga Boot Camp a.k.a. Peaceful Warrior Training:

What does the concept of being a Peaceful Warrior bring to mind for you?

Personally, I envision being centered and strong, in fighting shape but with the wisdom to flow rather than fight.

This vision makes me think of myself as powerful yet kind, skillful in living life to its fullest as the highest expression of who I am. It’s an inspiring and motivating idea!

To me, Yoga Boot Camp is like Peaceful Warrior Training.

Typically a warrior would awake and train first thing in the morning. And because the guiding wisdom of yoga is present in all of our practices, there is a definite depth to this program that calls to your highest self.

Blessings of Peace in 2013

However you practice yoga, there are always common elements. Stillness, movement, waves of breath… Yoga speaks to the essence of who you are and allows your natural state of peaceful being to shine through.

The three purest vibrational feelings are these: Love, Joy, and Peace

All others come from these three, or are in contrast to them. And so, when you practice, as you naturally purify your body, mind, and heart, these feelings become more clear and accessable.

It is a great gift. For yourself, and for the world.

May we all bring this gift to ourselves, to each other, and to the world in 2013.
